“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.” - Gore Vidal
Knowing yourself and how you want to be portrayed are important elements in understanding your style. When you are confident in this knowledge, you will find your personal strengths and know what complements your personality.
Follow these tips to get on a better path:
-
Know your style. The first thing you need to know is what furniture styles work for you and makes you happiest (i.e. traditional, transitional, modern). Finding which design concept works best for you will be essential. This process can take time, so it’s helpful to give yourself reference points from photos and magazines.
-
Keep a design diary. Any time you see a picture or colour you feel great about, add a note or picture to your diary. Create a scrapbook of styles that inspire you. Whenever you see other homes in a magazine or movie, or see something you admire, take a picture and add it to your design diary. This will work as a reference point when designing your own home, somewhere to look back and start your design inspiration.
-
Understand your personal colour scheme. Colours have a huge impact on your style and how you feel in a room. Some colours, like yellow and orange, can make you feel happy and excited while others, like blue and pink, can make you feel more calm and relaxed. Selecting different colours with similar hues can also enhance the overall ambiance. Knowing your colour palette will help express your style more effectively.
-
Be mindful of your style and simplify. Find the key elements in your style, honestly. Trying to rely on someone else’s opinion may cloud your judgment. You may enjoy an idea or piece, but if you’re not completely in love with it, realize this truth and let go. This will benefit you in the long run.
