Area rugs and hardwood floors are not mortal enemies!
Area Rug 101
What kind of thoughts come to mind when thinking of an area rug – maybe cozy? Warm? Ever wonder what the real purpose of an area rug is?
Know the basics
Our Design staff at Decorium will agree, although area rugs are warm and cozy, their main purpose is to define the space and designate a functional zone – for example the living room and dining room in one large open area.
The most important thing to know is that the size of the area rug conveys the approximate size of this ‘zone’.
Why does size matter?
An undersized rug will make a small room seem smaller and a large room look disconnected; therefore, go big! Place the rug underneath at least the first set of legs of the couch and chairs to create a cohesive look. Rugs typically look better when all the furniture is on them!
Remember, area rugs are a detail that make a room feel finished so choose one that complements all of its surrounding components. One thing I always tell people about patterned area rugs is to recognize where the pattern will ‘land’ after placement – if it is not an all-over consistent pattern (asymmetrical) then you must keep in mind where that big bold flower (for example) will be located once your furniture is placed on top.
Also, don’t be afraid to mix the scale of designs within the room. Have a small scattered print on your drapes? Try going for a large lively design on the area rug!
Get fearless, have fun and buy what you love! Afterall, the area rug can be art for your floor!
