We all know a piece of furniture that screams too loudly from decades past... the south western/mojave pink and blue sofa, the 70’s shag carpet and avocado stoves… I'm sure we just described the childhood home of some of our readers! All very good, once upon a time, but most trends will eventually date your room… And not like how a classic piece of furniture might. By all means, explore the latest trend, but remember that by the time the public is on to it, the design world has long since moved on. That's just the nature of furniture trends and trends in general. Classic furniture never goes out of style. A bergere chair recovered in a rich jewel tone would be considered on trend today, and can be mixed in with so many other styles of décor. The love affair continues with the Danish mid-century modern style, but again, mix it up with other designs so your living room doesn’t look like a set for the dick van dyke show.

When a style becomes popular, all kinds of knock offs happen. Quality goes out the window and you’re going to be replacing that ‘iconic’ piece far too soon. Don’t go too far out of your comfort zone unless that is truly what you love. Outside opinions on your space should only matter if they know you and know what looks good. Remember that furniture trends come and go, but good pieces of furniture and an open mind will never be off trend. Try a few pieces in a particular style, and see if that works for you.
